All of my classes teach what you might call traditional botanical art. Some of the techiques I teach go back to the middle ages and allow a closely rendered and accurate painting. I approach skill building step by step so that students can achieve satisfying work that encourages them to continue in this beautiful and popular art genre. I include a bit of botany in each class because I believe the more you know the more inspired your work will be. I also believe that just as an artist who works with the human figure needs to learn anatomy the botanical artist looks for typical growth patterns that practically tell the artist how to paint the subject.
I often have more than one class going at a time and usually encorporate season themes in the subjects that are picked to work with i.e. fall leaves and mushrooms in the fall, early spring woodland flowers in the spring etc. I also allow students who have there own vision and experience to work on their own. In this case my role is more that of an advisor.
I love my subject and I believe that this inspires my students to see the world and art in an enriched way.
