Review of Elise Wagner, March 09, 2009

The minute I walked into Elise's workshop/studio the smell of beeswax hit me and wow; loved it.

Everything was set up for us, the wax on hot plates, the brushes already leaning in the cans of beautiful rich colors, heat torches and irons, even the boards for us to work on; it was all there. I didn't have to bring anything except some xeroxes and pictures for collage.

Elise gave her little speech about the origins of the medium and how it's been used over the centuries; the ins and outs on how it works; some pointers and "how-to's" and demonstrated as she went. And it wasn't without the occasional joke or funny story.

Most everything seemed so organic and the tools so simple, like I was in the kitchen cooking up a great stew or spaghetti sauce. In fact, I'm telling everyone that her style of teaching and the way she maneuvers around the studio: "She's the Rachael Ray of the encaustic world."

The best part for me was the individual attention because she keeps her classes small enough that everyone gets some undivided attention. And get this, I not only finished working on one of my boards, but it was dry and ready to hang. One day. In a few hours. A dream come true for Mr. A.D.D. over here.

I've been showing people the painting and getting great reviews. Of course it's got one of my photos on it that had been xeroxed and transfered on to the board. It really made everything "pop" and the way Elise explained the process made it simple and easy.

Elise is so personable and easy going, definitely a no stress class. Like I said, think Rachael Ray.

Review of Elise Wagner, February 22, 2009

Elise Wagner is that rare breed of artist who is also a profoundly gifted teacher. You will leave her encaustic workshop with a rock-solid understanding of the technical elements necessary to continue encaustic work in your own studio. Elise's studio is perfectly set up for a small group workshop: plenty of space and light, terrific ventilation, an amazing array of tools and collage materials, and of course the best encaustic paints on the market from Elise's own line.Elise has a really deep field of experience in fine art production and materials, and is very generous about sharing her knowledge without overwhelming you. She also is great at letting you do your own thing, but will jump in to help you out with design ideas or quick fixes if you request. She's very well organized, so you cover a lot of material really efficiently. I would recommend this workshop for anyone from a beginning artist or crafter all the way to a highly experienced artist looking to branch out into a new medium. One warning: once you try encaustic with Elise Wagner, you'll be hooked! You won't believe how fast the day goes by and you'll be bubbling over with more ideas for encaustic paintings. Everyone in my recent workshop immediately signed up for the next workshop!
