Steampunk refers to a parallel universe where the styles and sciences of Victorian England combine with advanced technology and other-worldly creatures. A world where steam power reigns supreme and all automated devices are made with elegance and individuality. People travel in dirigibles and steam-powered buggies, while Victorian manners still prevail. Imagine yourself wearing a bustle under your miniskirt, reading H.G. Wells’ science fiction and being served Earl Grey tea in a china cup by your automaton butler. Steampunk is many things to many people, but always includes a love of Victoriana with modern touches and machines where you can see the gadgetry at work. Steampunk says “yes” to technology, but insists that beauty and artistry not be left behind.

Review of Serena Barton, January 02, 2009
I've been in Serena's women's art group for over a year. What I love about Serena's style is that she makes art very approachable. She makes art about experimentation, discovery, and play rather than perfecting techniques and getting critiqued. The group has a casual, spunky, fun, accepting atmosphere that I enjoy. Experimentation is encouraged and if you don't like something you made - hey, paint over it!
She is definitely not an "art school" type of instructor, which I really like. At the same time, I have learned specific techniques, like how to make altered books and how to paint faces. But I learned it in a way that wasn't intimidating and scary. And while we don't do critiques in the group, we do share and appreciate each others work, and talk about what we see in it, which I find illuminating.
