Most of us have explored crayons and paints but few have been introduced to the magical world of sculpture, particularly the human figure. If you have always wondered how it would feel like to have clay between your fingers, and experience the magical transformation from a clump of clay to a recognizable human shape, this is the class for you. I have been teaching this class since 1996 and have given sculpture demonstrations at the Legion of Honor Museum. This class has evolved into so much more than learning basic human anatomy; it is the foundation for all visual arts and just as important, it will be three hours of fun and relaxation.
.
We have yet to find a subject more eloquent, visually stimulating, complex and challenging than the human figure. We may begin with basic human anatomy lessons, but we culminate in acquiring knowledge on design, balance, proportions, surface modeling and much more. You will learn the correct way to “see” a three dimensional object in order to capture many of the infinite profiles the human figure offers. In addition you will gain experience using various sculpting tools, modeling techniques, building an armature, hollowing and preparation of your sculpture before firing. We hire a professional model for the entire duration of the class. No prior experience is necessary so please don’t feel intimidated if you have never sculpted before.

Student Testimonials
.
"Marilyn Rodriguez’s teaching technique is extraordinary and unique: she instructs in the manner of the old masters, on a one-to-one level, about human anatomy, in order to enable you to translate this knowledge into bas-relief and sculpture. Whether you are a draughts person, or working in animation, or as an independent artist, this class will propel you to the next level of seeing and producing better art than you thought yourself capable of making.” ~ E. Cornu, Head Objects Conservator, DeYoung Museum, SF, CA
.
“It is difficult to sculpt a classic human figure; it must be even harder to teach others how to do so. Marilyn does it and does so well it seems easy. She is very thorough and gives to-the-point assessments to her students while at the same time respecting their artistic individualities. I recommend her highly.” ~ M. Torres- Quinones
.
“Marilyn is a great talent. She really knows her craft. She teaches the right skills in the right order, not too much instruction, allowing students to experiment, but she always has great advice when you ask for it, and there are layers and layers of skill she can unfold as you need them. Fantastic!” ~ S. Fleischer
.
“Sculpting classes helped me appreciate the beauty of creation and discover my new passion. From my experience, sculpting is the creation process where we can put our body, our soul and the clay to work to materialize our perceptions and feelings. I was amazed with the results of my first sculpture. The teaching technique lets you use your best abilities to accomplish great results.” ~ V. Machnicki
.
“Sculpting with Marilyn cannot be likened to anything else. Whether or not you have sculpted before or not is completely independent to what you get out of this class, and I am not just talking about the actual sculpture! Enlightenment into one’s self from a very different perspective and talent flow to greet you and leave you feeling like you can do anything you ever put your mind to. I guarantee you will be surprised with what you take away from this class, and you’ll have a new love and respect for yourself and sculpting. I am addicted.” ~ S. Popham
.
“I was Marilyn Rodriquez first student fourteen years ago. I've since gone on to become a professional sculptor, and would not see this happening unless I took the time to study the human form. I consider Marilyn to be a master sculptor as well teacher. She has a passion for her life, work and career.” ~ D. L. Baughan
.
“I look forward to your class so much. I especially love the silent moments when you become so intent on what you’re working on that the only thing that reminds you where you are is the sound of the wind chimes... Or is it the wind chimes that help you let go... Maybe they're more like a string holding onto a helium balloon. Regardless, your class offers a peaceful escape from the rest of the world. Thank you for that.” ~ L. Steinberger
.
“I enrolled in Marilyn’s class and what I discovered was a warm, friendly group of people who were enjoying art for the sake of art. Marilyn has an amazing gift in that she knows how to explain and help without taking over and making it her work instead of the students. I learned and amazing amount of information in a short amount of time. I would strongly recommend Marilyn’s class for anyone with a love of art. There were people with years of experience and complete amateurs like me. She treated us all with respect and genuine caring. I look forward to taking another class with her soon.” ~D. Ruddell
.
“Marilyn is a born teacher. She doesn't dictate what to do. She guides you and lets you find your way so that the discovery is really yours to claim. Leave your troubles at the door; discover a new way of seeing and creating. Take this class and enjoy the rewards the rest of your life." ~ A. Osborne
