The Human Figure in Clay with professional model.
The only privately taught classical sculpture class in San Francisco AND with only seven students!
Most of us have explored crayons and paints but few have been introduced to the magical world of sculpture. If you have always wondered how it would feel like to have clay between your fingers, and experience the magical transformation from a clump of clay to a recognizable human shape, this is the class for you. I have been teaching this class since 1996 and have given sculpture demonstrations at the Legion of Honor Museum. This class has evolved into so much more than learning basic human anatomy; it is the foundation for all visual arts and just as important, it will be three hours of fun and relaxation.
We have yet to find a subject more eloquent, visually stimulating, complex and challenging than the human figure. We may begin with basic human anatomy lessons, but we culminate in acquiring knowledge on design, balance, proportions, surface modeling and much more. You will learn the correct way to “see” a three dimensional object in order to capture many of the infinite profiles the human figure offers. In addition you will gain experience using various sculpting tools, modeling techniques, building an armature, hollowing and preparation of your sculpture before firing. We hire a professional model for the entire duration of the class.
No prior experience is necessary so please don’t feel intimidated if you have never sculpted before.
One of the unique and best features of this class, which you don’t get in most other art classes, is that it is a small class of only seven students; therefore you will be able to move around and close to the model at your convenience, allowing you to see details. You will also be able to receive plenty of individual attention. It’s OK to miss 2-3 classes, most students do and we end up most of the times hiring the model for extra make-up classes. These three hours will become your favorite hours of the week. This class gets full, make your reservation ASAP. For a fast response please write to my personal email mirstudio@comcast.net. Review of Sculpture Class - The Human Figure in clay, November 06, 2009
This is an excellant class for all levels of experience - from beginners to advanced. The class decides on the pose as a group, but then everyone works at their own level and gets individualized instruction from Marilyn. The classes are small and a very nice rapport develops among the students & model & instructor.
Marilyn is a very good teacher for many reasons. First of all, she is excited by sculpture and in what we get out of the class, both for the artwork that we create but also for the intangible benefits we get from our conversations and critiques. She is a great believer in the beauty that art brings to our lives, not only the art "piece".
I have taken the class twice so far, and plan on taking more classes in the future. It is not so easy to have access to a live model for such an extended period of time, & to have Marilyn's experienced instruction on top of that is a great combination.

Review of Sculpture Class - The Human Figure in clay, October 26, 2009
This is a class where a person can get a lot of help and information from a person who has a lot of indispensible knowledge of anatomy. I have been in plenty of classes, and I have not experienced students being helped in this way. It also helps that the class is small, and it is not intimidating, and this just increases the opportunity for a person to get personal attention from a knowledgeable person who is naturally willing to help anyway. And sometmes jokes are cracked. It's cozy, and personally that's an ideal atmosphere for my creativity to manifest. I personally have two pieces in an art gallery in downtown San Francisco from her classes, one of which is positioned atop a clear grand piano.
