  • ""The complete package""

Review of Jared MacFarlane, July 31, 2009

Jared is the complete package, combining youthful energy and enthusiasm with the maturity of a seasoned professional. It’s rare to find an instructor who completely understands the importance of balancing solid technical grounding with understanding the bigger picture, without distancing himself from the student. He is always eager to share what he knows, conveying ideas with a hip, down-to-earth style, mixed with a delightfully dry sense of humor. I especially admire his thorough knowledge of so many disparate genres of music, recognizing the value of respecting the past, while embracing all the best along the way that has painted today’s current musical landscape. More simply put, Jared ‘gets it’, and loves what he does! Highest recommendation.

  • "The best!"

Review of Jared MacFarlane, March 19, 2009

Jared has been my daughter's violin teacher for nearly seven years. He has patiently and creatively worked with her since she was six years old. She now plays first violin with the Seattle Youth Symphony organization, and in our church's orchestra. My daughter enjoys music, which definitely contributes to her success, but I believe she can attribute the major part of her accomplishments to Jared's skill as a teacher.

Sinde my daughter was a very young beginner, Jared has made lessons fun and age-appropriate. He is an exacting teacher, yet very understanding of the nature of young children. We got to take the very necessary wiggle breaks during lessons, and had a very gracious listener to many new and unusual compositions. Jared has been a great judge of my daughter's learning style, so he is able to relate complex concepts and teach challenging techniques in ways that she has been able to easily grasp.

The Suzuki method encourages parent involvement in the student's training, and Jared has always taken the time to show me how to help my daughter practice at home in order to achieve the maximum benefit from our lessons. He encourages parents to take notes during lessons, and questions are always welcome. Since the Suzuki method of instruction teaches children to learn music the way they learn language in the early years (by listening), Jared supplements the curriculum with music theory and sightreading as students progress through the years.

Every summer we go to the Oregon Suzuki Institute for a week of fun and learning (LOTS of fun). Master teachers from all over the country work with students to help them make the most of their skills. Every year, Jared is complemented through my daughter's performance at the Institute. The teachers have told me that they are able to tell from her form, tone and technique that she has an excellent teacher. We think so, too!
