Extreme Art: Enrico Labayen
By Mario Banzon, Arts/Culture Editor, The Phillippine Star
Dancer Enrico Labayen slowly uncurls beneath a white cloth and emerges bare-chested on the center of the stage. He is wearing a billowing skirt and nothing else. His movements are slow and deliberate. Labayen seems to be laboring under great pain with Puccini’s music. Eventually, however, the movements become abrupt and angry. One can see what made The Jordan Daily hail the choreographer a genius. The dance gives you various elements to ponder on: the pained choreography, Puccini, and allusions to Madame Butterfly (the title of the dance being Another Butterfly), and the fact that he is trying to depict the “women’s journey of love, hate, and subservience.” Labayen, who has a close shaved head and lean torso, is undeniably a man. Interestingly, he seems to consciously erase gender as a prerequisite for procuring roles. Time and time again, women dancers would perform dances that the choreographer primarily created for males, and vice-versa.
At the end of the performance, Labayen is left exhausted and literally naked, with only a few strips of white cloth covering his privates. It was, to put it succinctly, quite intense.
Exploding with emotion
Extreme is what best describes the works of Labayen. It’s such a cliché, with every other artist being described as such, but the adjective fits the dancer perfectly. Consider the artist’s choreography: Where there should be a nimble hop, there are feet falling heavily to the ground. Where there should be an arm gracefully arching in the air, there is a tightly clenched fist slamming into a bare torso. Each movement threatens to explode with emotion. Despite the experimentation with movement, Labayen’s works are firmly rooted in classical ballet. What he does, however, is infused with various influences from American modern jazz to Asian ethnic rituals and movements. “Rarely does a choreographer of contemporary dance manage gracefully to combine the technical precision and elegance of classical ballet with the freedom and innovation of modern art,” acclaims Dance Magazine, more or less describing a typical Enrico Labayen experience.

On Choreography: An idea
Posted by Labayen Dance on March 17, 2009
If an idea works in art it’s not because of the worthiness or the strength of the idea but because of how it is worked. This is not just about how it is rendered or translated into art. Instead, it is how it works within the activity of art-producing, how it twists, deforms, regulates, directs, translates, frees, re-works the very intentionality and capacity of the artist. Unless it has the capacity to make and to unmake the artist it’s a waste of time.For...
How to lift a ballerina and be a great partner!
Posted by Maximo Califano on February 17, 2009
There are many important principles to be a great partner. One of the first and most relevant one is that men should use their legs to lift the ballerinas and press their stomachs in to protect their backs.Another important matter is to mix the skill levels in a class. It is good idea to put together an inexperience guy with a more experience ballerina or vice verse so they can help each other. Now, when two dancers have no partnering skills, it is recommended to teach them...

Ballet is such a beautiful art - those lift moves always looked so scary to me! And what strength it takes to execute - just beautiful.
