I teach first, "by ear" using recorded lessons in banjo, guitar, and bass. Notation, tab, and theory are helpful sign posts on the musical experience. I also encourage students to listen to, and nurture their own voice as a primary instrument. Your ears, and your voice can be powerful tools to connect with instrumental skills.
