I am offering banjo lessons (Scruggs and/or melodic style bluegrass is the primary emphasis - but blues, jazz, other styles can be explored) with an emphasis on helping players learn how to create their own solos and backup to songs, how to figure songs out by ear, and how to apply music theory to make the creation of their own music easier. I can write out tab but emphasize learning by using recordings of the material covered during the lesson, which leads to a deeper understanding of the banjo and a better developed ear. I have lots of playing, recording, and teaching experience, including stints with Dr. Corn’s Bluegrass Remedy, the Muddy Bottom Boys, New Old Friends, Train 145, Ida Viper, Front Range, Sam Hill, Peter Rowan, Vassar Clements, Jack Cooke and the Virginia Mountain Boys, Del McCoury and the Dixie Pals, and others.

Review of bluegrass banjo instruction, November 18, 2009

Wouldn't you jump as the chance to take a lesson from Earl Scruggs or Bela Fleck? Those of us living in the Pacific Northwest are really fortunate to have the opportunity to take lessons from a "Master". Peter is not only one of the best banjo pickers out there, he is also a great instructor, and I don't say that lightly. Few can teach as well as they play; Peter can. He uses his experience to "size up" a student, then gives instruction that, if followed, will make him/her a much better banjo player. I drive over 100 miles one way to take lessons from Peter. I wish I lived closer so I could get on a regular lesson schedule, but he always gives me plenty to work on between lessons. Be sure to record his lessons; you can't remember all the detail he gives. If you are serious about learning to play the banjo, I don't know of anyone more qualified (without going back East).
