Practice doesn't make perfect............

Everyone has heard the saying that practice makes perfect.  I have a different motto that I go by and that I instill in my players as well, and that is:  "Practice doesn't make perfect......the CORRECT practice makes perfect".  There are so many different areas of basketball that need to be practiced in order to be a great player and there is a specific way to which these areas of the game must be practiced.  I instruct my students with the idea that when we are finished with our lesson that they will practice on their own time the correct way.  So I give each student specific tasks to do each week and a number of drills that relate to whatever we may have worked on in that given lesson.  I want my students to understand that simply going through the motions is not enough if one wants to be great at something.  I instill in each one of my players and students the concept of tenacity.  I make them understand that they must give everything they have when doing their drills and they absolutely must do the drills the correct way with the correct fundamentals, never changing up what they have been taught.  When learning the game of basketball, a lot of the process has to do with repetition.  The goal is to get a player to repeat a particular aspect of the game over and over the exact same way so that eventually the player will no longer have to think about that particular aspect but instead will simply react, the CORRECT way.  Take shooting for instance, a very difficult process to learn when young because of lack of strength.  I break the shooting form down into 5 easy to follow steps that work phenomonally with my young players.  Many of my young students want to use their shoulders more in the shooting process and heave the ball due to lack of strength.  A lot of them get discouraged because they can't shoot long range with the correct form that I am teaching them to use.  I must constantly stay on top of them and remind them about repitiion and that eventually it will become easier and as they grow they will become stronger.  I remind them that at some point their shooting form, correct and beautiful of course, will collide with their new and improved strength and wholoa, they will be shooting much farther from the basket with great form and accuracy.
