The secret of shooting with the perfect form!
Posted by Nick Nobriga on July 28, 2009
Like many of my lessons that I teach, I enjoy breaking down each aspect of the game into easy to learn steps for my players. When it comes to the art of the shot, I break the shot down into five easy to follow steps that help my players for the perfect shooting techniques. The steps are as follows:
#1 Foot position/Squaring up to the basket
- - right handed players should point their right toes to the basket and vice versa for left hand shooters
- - Feet should be shoulder length apart and knees slightly bent
#2 Hand position on the ball
- - fingers should be spread and shooting hand should be behind the ball, not on the side or over the top
#3 Shooters Pocket
- - Put the shooting arm up at a ninety degree angle with the elboe in tightly to the side.
#4 Shooting the ball
- - Use your legs to shoot the ball, don't let your shoulders do the work. Snap both the elbow and the wrist of the shooing hand and give the ball some backwards rotation from the snap of the wrist. Don't shoot the ball flat, put arch on the ball.
#5 Follow through
- - Last but not least you must follow through after you shoot the ball. Following through is simply holding the shooting arm after the shot is taking and pointing it at the hoop. This allows you to see if your arm is high in the air which contributes to givng the ball arch or not and directs that ball to where you want
