Pottery Lessons

Subject: Berkeley Ceramics Classes

Ages: 15 year olds or older

All classes at the Potters' Studio are on-going, just choose a class day, come to the studio, or call first, and that will be the start of your 8 week session.

CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Each of these classes is designed to introduce the beginning potter or ceramic artist to the first steps in throwing on the potter's wheel, or handbuilding forms,( both utilitarian or sculptural) off the wheel.
For the intermediate or more advanced student: more complex techniques and forms will be introduced through individual instruction or class demonstrations, thus building experiences and skills to form teapots, lidded forms and larger sculptural pieces. These classes include demonstrations in various glaze and surface techniques.
The course fee of $227 includes 8 classes(3 hours each), free recycled clay, and 2cuft of firing space. Outside of class times students can come in during staff hours, M-TH 11am-3pm, or whenever a studio member is present, and during gallery hours Saturday and Sunday 11:30am -4:30pm.

Bio: Bob Johnson has been teaching and working in ceramics as he says, "before the invention of dirt." He received a BFA and MFA from CCA with a major in ceramics. He has taught at Chadron State College in Nebraska, and at New Mexico State University as a member of both the graduate and undergraduate faculty. He has shown in many galleries throughout the U.S. including the Fairtree Gallery in New York City, and is included in various collections including New York State University at Buffalo, the permanent collection at CCA, and the Antonio Prieto Memorial Collection of Contemporary Ceramics at Mills College. Bob Johnson created Big River Pottery in New Mexico, selling his work throughout the U.S. while working as a firefighter. He has taught at the Potters' Studio and Studio One in Oakland since 1990. He is also a musician playing bluegrass on the dobro in the Redwing Bluegrass Band.
