Seeing What's Really There

Seeing What's Really There
Skill Develop at Uneven Rates

Tennis shoes clapping against asphalt. Voices chanting, "Cinderella, dressed in yellow..."
Any rope-skipper who made it as far as "kissed a fellow" or even the word "yellow" was out of my league.  If there was a kid on each side of me, holding the ends of the jumprope, I could make it two-three-four skips before I missed.  If I was holding the rope myself, I didn't get as far as "Cinderella".   I never skipped to a count of 1, not in all my years of being a kid -- not even in college, when I stumbled, quite literally, through a class in teaching elementary PE.
How was it that even younger kids could could coordinate the arm motions and the jumping?  I wondered. As for me, I could...

New Beginnings - Safety with Children & Dogs

Posted by Linda McVay on July 31, 2009

A number of our clients have been welcoming new life into their homes; some in the form of a puppy or older dog and many in the form of a tiny, squealing bundle of human joy. We congratulate you all!
Having said that, the number of requests for child/baby/dog reading materials has gone up, which is actually a wonderful satisfaction for us. I hope that this trend continues to grow because the earlier in a pregnancy that you start preparing your dog for the new arrival the easier the transition will be for everyone involved. For those bringing a new dog into the home the same thing applies. Beginning to teach your family how to interact in the appropriate way with your soon-to-be new family member is best done before the arrival of the dog. I like to think of it as “paying it forward.”
However, when I send the requested materials about babies or young children and dogs, many are astonished to see in bold font, “Children and dogs need to supervised at all times until the age of eight!” After the age of eight most children can be left for short periods of time, but it is important to remember that you will have had to do the some basic dog/child education sessions on what is...

What is a children's museum?

Posted by KidsQuest Childrens Museum on July 09, 2009

What is a children’s museum? That is sometimes a difficult question for people to answer. When we hear the word museum we often think of a place where “inside voices” are used and a place that we are expected to look with our eyes and not with our hands. A children’s museum, however, couldn’t...

Maintaining Milk Supply when Mother and Baby are Apart

Posted by Cindy Howard on February 17, 2009

Some mothers overflow with milk no matter what they do. Others have more trouble maintaining milk supply when they are regularly apart from baby. Here are some ideas for keeping your milk supply up.•    Give yourself two weeks to store milk and practice different feeding methods before returning to work.  Remember that there are lots of ways to get milk into a baby so if your baby refuses a bottle, consider using a sippy cup or medicine spoon.•    Consider returning to work on a Thursday so you only have to prepare for a couple of days before you have a weekend to recover.•    Try an automatic double pump. For some mothers the pump doesn't matter, for others it really makes a difference.  Some manual pumps have bubble inserts that help massage the breasts during pumping.  These inserts can also be used with electric double...
