Beginning Composition

I teach private and small group beginning musical composition to ALL levels musician, from the conservatory-trained professional to the 6-year-old novice. I don't believe, as many music teachers do, that a student needs to have been playing and studying an instrument for many years before attempting to write music. In school, as soon as a child learns his alphabet and can spell his own name, he begins writing. As musicians, we do much "lip service" to the notion that music teaches creativity. However, the aspect of the music-making process through which one's individual voice can best emerge is composition (or improvisation, which in many ways is just a form of composition). Creative people run the world, so let yourself be creative and learn how to write music!
