Crowdsourcing 101: The art of getting others to do your work for cheap!
Have you heard of crowsourcing? The idea is simple, and I'll use three examples to illustrate:
1) Why should you waste your time trying to find the cheapest airline ticket. How about this: Find the best price you can on Kayak, and then offer $5 to anyone who finds you something that is $15 or less than the best price you found.
2) You want to come up with a name for y...

1) Why should you waste your time trying to find the cheapest airline ticket. How about this: Find the best price you can on Kayak, and then offer $5 to anyone who finds you something that is $15 or less than the best price you found.
2) You want to come up with a name for your brand but have no idea how people think/feel about it. How about surveying a 100 people for $5?
3) You'd love to follow all the top 100 football players on Twitter. There are a 100 of them and since there is no directory you know it is going to be a pain to find all their Twitter handles, and therefore you decide not to pursue the project. Crowdsource it!
You can get 1 to a 1000 people doing work for you in a second. Imagine all the things you could get done, and all the time you will free up for other tasks which interest you more. If you want to learn the basics of crowdsourcing then this class is your chance to take your personal productivity (and laziness) to a whole new level! In this class I will be specifically covering Smartsheet's Smartsourcing solution, Amazon's Mechanical Turk, Twitter, and Yahoo answers

Review of Crowdsourcing 101: The art of getting others to do your work for cheap!, October 15, 2009
Ayush - I loved the class. It was very good for beginners which I was, so that fit! I was a little confused about it being an overview of smartsheet specifically instead about using the power of the crowds in general but that may totally be me setting wrong expectations around the latter. Nevertheless, it would have been nice to have some historical context on using the power of the crowds with examples elaborating how it had successfully worked and failed too to set the stage for crowdsourcing.
I did try smartsheet but could not get very good results. So I used Mechanical turk directly but that did not give me good results either. I think the reason behind that though is that I am still lacking in creating tasks that are dumb enough to be handled by the crowds so in the end I just gave up. Perhaps that would be a class idea in itself - just having 10-12 complex tasks and showing how you would break them up for crowdsourcing and get real good effective results.

Teacher's Response:
Kirti, thanks for the candid review. I'm glad you enjoyed the class, though I'm sorry that you could not get very good results with Smartsheet or with Mechanical Turk. I think you are probably right in that the tasks do need to be very very basic.
If you like, I'd be happy to sit down with you again and walk you through some more examples.
Thanks,

Understanding the way you can use SmartSheets and Mechanical Turk through SmartSourcing will save you a ton of time. If you have something that takes time, very mundane, and is very important -- smartsourcing is the way to go. Since the class, I've used this method to do a lot of my work, which has saved me more time allowing me to work on things that matter the most.
Ayush definitely give a good explanation of the process, the tools, and how to use it properly. He's quite patient and went through a good amount of examples to give us an idea of how we would use it for our business.
