While Adobe Photoshop has always focused on digital image editing in regards to print and web, Macromedia Fireworks sole focus has always been on creating web graphics. Since Adobe acquired Macromedia some changes have been made to these somewhat competitive products. For example, Adobe Photoshop CS2 and earlier included an additional program called ImageReady, a tool for creating web graphics and code for inserting web graphics into web page layouts. With the release of Adobe Photoshop CS3, Adobe no longer bundled ImageReady, opting instead to place all of ImageReady's functionality into Adobe Fireworks CS3. Fireworks is a powerful production tool for Web designers. It is capable of creating full web page layouts including HTML and CSS code, animated graphics, and complex web page mockups as well as optimizing images for the web. With Adobe Fireworks CS4 just around the corner, expect more functionality in the areas of web design and code creation from this complex image editing software. Our Introduction to Fireworks class covers all of the basic image editing skills with the focus of preparing images for the web. This class goes on to also cover the creation of common web page components including buttons with rollover effects (using Fireworks created JavaScript) and more. This course will lay the groundwork for students who wish to gain efficiency in this product before the emerging CS4 application is released. This class may be customized.

Class Objectives:

* Understand the differences between bitmap and vector graphics.
* Use the Info panel to precisely scale objects.
* Use Fireworks to create and manipulate complex vector graphics and apply effects, textures, and patterns.
* Understand the GIF, JPEG, and PNG file formats to choose the right one for each kind of image.
* Import bitmap (raster) graphics and modify them.
* Create selections within bitmap images using the Lasso, Marquee, and Magic Wand tools.
* Import and modify text objects, and merge them with vector graphics.
* Understand image resolution as it pertains to Web based graphics.
* Show and edit rulers, grids, and guides in order to position items with precision on a Web page.
* Create hotspots to which you will assign links, alt text, and link targets.
* Slice complex images into sections and use the Optimize panel and Fireworks’ Preview modes to optimize the images individually.
* Create simple and customized rollover and disjoint rollover effects using effects, patterns, and textures.
* Export a multi-frame Fireworks file with rollover effects as an HTML document.

Review of Kevin Ruse, July 16, 2009

I sat in Kevin's desktop publishing class at Silicon Valley College and was very impressed at his thorough knowledge of Photoshop and Quark Xpress. He understood the technical background of these programs deeply, and was able to focus and teach the lessons efficiently. Kevin maintained a very professional attitude, and stayed on topic at all times. Kevin used the class time to maximize the lessons and amount of information he had to teach in a very short period.

Review of Kevin Ruse, May 18, 2009

Dave was very knowledgeable in teaching the 3 day Dreamweaver CS4 class. He answered our questions very thoroughly and many times he use examples. He taught with the book as well as add a few subjects not found in the book. The Adobe book was unique in some of the examples that I had not seen in other books about Dreamweaver CS4. Thanks Dave
