Three Good Reasons Not to Place Your Knives in the Dishwasher
There are three good reasons for not placing any of your precious French knives in the dishwasher. First and foremost the water is too hot, and the drying cycle is too hot. Secondly, the harshness of the soap plus the heat all contribute to ruining the temper of your blades. The temper of the blade is what helps it take a good edge and keep that good edge. Finally, all these factors contribute to the deterioration of the beautifully finished handles.
A well cared for knife can last through more than one family generation. Good things are worth caring for well. Hand wash your knives, dry them and put them safely away and they will serve you well for a long time.

Great advice, I've been hand-washing my knives for a long time, and they've lasted me years so far. What's the best way to keep them nice and sharp?

The best way to protect your knives is to keep them on a wall magnet or in a knife block. Use a sharpening steel from time to time, but if they need real sharpening, take them to a professional knife sharpening business.
