How to really eat Bi-Bim-Bap (mixed rice + vegetables)

Posted by Gracie on February 12, 2009

Of course you can simply enter into a restaurant, sit, eat, pay your check and be on your merry way. But where's the cultural experience in that?  Here are the steps to make and enjoy a traditional Korean dish called "bibimbap" (mixed rice + vegetables).

STEP 1
Take the following cooked/ready ingredients and place them aside: Cooked rice, spinach, kosari, zucchini, bean sprouts, Shiitake mushrooms, ground beef, eggs, carrots, soy sauce, hot pepper paste, garlic, sesame seeds, sesame oil, vegetable oil and black pepper.

STEP 2
Heat up your stone bowl on high heat on your stove for about 10 minutes.

STEP 3
Remove the bowl from the stove and then add the rice, but do not compress it down (you should hear some sizzling - if not, the stone bowl isn't hot enough).

STEP 4
Add all of the vegetables and meat to the bowl.  Place the cooked egg on top of the rice and vegetables.

STEP 5
Add one tablespoon of hot pepper paste to the bowl (add more if you like to eat spicy), two dashes of sesame seeds and about two teaspoons of sesame oil to the bowl (or to taste).

STEP 6
Now take your spoon and compress the vegetables and rice down against the stone bowl.  After a minute or two, mixed all of the contents in the bowl together and enjoy!

STEP 7
Now, you should have some rice that is left in your stone bowl that is "crispy".  Add hot water to the bowl and let sit for a minute.  Stir and enjoy some rice tea.

    • There's nothing like stone pot bibimbop. I had some last week, and remembered how tasty it was. I love Korean restaurants since they give you so much appetizers. Love it!
