Avalanche Safety Level 1
The Level I Avalanche Safety Course introduces you to avalanche hazards. You will learn the basics of how to recognize these hazards, how to manage them, how to minimize them, and finally how to respond in case of an emergency.
We spend the course building up to a decision making process to help you decide where, how, and when to travel.

- Basics of route selection/terrain features,
- Basic tests techniques and interpretation,
- Educated decision making,
- Basic rescue techniques,
- Group management.
You can expect to gain an understanding of safe travel in a winter environment, what sorts of hazards to watch for and the various pressures that weigh on the decision making process.

Crested Butte Mountain Guides specializes in personal, professional, and customized guiding and instruction in backcountry skiing, rock climbing, avalanche education, mountaineering, mountain biking, hut trips, sea kayaking, ice climbing, and hiking. We are the only fully permitted year-round guide service in the Gunnison Valley.
Located in our little cabin in the middle of downtown Crested Butte, CO, this is where it all begins. It is here, in this cozy little alpine style hut that you will meet your guide, receive any neccessary gear, and begin the adventure of a lifetime. The Crested Butte Mountain Guides have over fifteen years of experience working and playing in the Elk Mountains of Colorado. Our guides are local area experts in terms of knowing the best snow to ski, getting you to the top of your first rock climb, taking you sea kayaking in Colorado, helping you climb a frozen waterfall, showing you the secret spots where all the summer alpine wildflowers are best, or guiding you down the nation's best single track. Whether it is your first trip with us, or your 100th, you can be assured you will receive a fun, safe, and professional experience.
CBMG supports and operates under the guidelines set forth by the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA). The AMGA is our nation’s sole representative to the twenty-one-member International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations (IFMGA), the international governing body responsible for guiding standards and education around the world. All of our senior guides, and most of our newer guides, are somewhere on the AMGA training tract towards reaching full certification in each discipline: rock, alpine, and ski. All of our ski guides have AMGA Ski Guide training or certification.
CBMG is also proud to hold the permit to guide in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, world-renowned wilderness big wall rock climbing destination.
