Personal coaching (Level 2): Bicycle Handling Skills Clinic.

If you know how to balance and pedal but would like to improve your bicycle handling skills and confidence, this coaching is for you. Lessons are held on a paved off-street practice area, and are offered 1-on-1 and for groups of up to four students.

Bicycle Handling Skills Clinic students learn how to:

* Begin pedaling quickly -- without hesitation

* Stop smoothly and precisely -- without fear of falling

* Prepare for a quick re-start -- ready to go when it's your turn at a stop sign or traffic signal

* Turn confidently without wobbling -- both while pedaling and coasting

* Scan behind to check for a gap in traffic, without veering

* Steer confidently with one hand -- to safely give a hand signal or use a water bottle

* Scan, signal, and move to a new line of travel -- essential for changing lanes or getting in line with other drivers

* Shift gears smoothly and understand when to shift -- to make riding up or down hills easier

Locations and Details

I offer lessons by appointment in San Francisco, San Mateo, and Palo Alto. Lessons are held on a playground or parking lot with no cars or other bicyclists to worry about. You can bring your own bicycle, or rent one at a nearby bike shop that I can recommend. Please bring your own bike helmet -- buy a new one if you don't have one.

Most Bicycle Handling Skills Clinic students learn what they need in one lesson of 1 to 2 hours. The fee is $60/hour for 1-on-1 lessons, and $50/hour per student for up to four students.

Great preparation for a street cycling class

The Bicycle Handling Skills Clinic is a great way to make sure you're ready for the on-bike part of the bicycle driver education (street cycling) classes held regularly in San Francisco and around the Bay Area. We can refer you to street cycling classes in your area.

A great gift...

Do you wish that a friend or family member could ride their bike more confidently so you could enjoy cycling together? Give a gift that unlocks a world of fun... better bicycle handling skills!

Review of Bicycle Handling Skills Clinic, October 09, 2009

I gave up all hopes of learning to bike after taking many hours of classes from teachers in the East Caost. However, free lessons at the SF bike coalition sounded like a great deal so I signed up. I learned how to balance, paddle and turn within three hours. Then, I supplemented that with 1.5 hour of lessons from John. Now, I can bike. John and his co-teachers at the SF bike coalition work wonders. They are great teacher who love bicycling and have the patience and commitment to help others learn. I cannot be more grateful for their lessons and their proven methods.

Review of Bicycle Handling Skills Clinic, September 05, 2009

Last January I crashed my bike trying to avoid an altercation with a taxi pulling away from the curb into a busy intersection, hit the pavement and broke my shoulder. Two surgeries and seven months of physical therapy later, I wanted to ride again but was scared and lacked confidence in my technique. I decided to get an assessment from John Ciccarelli, to see what I might be doing wrong and to learn how to correct those things. He was able to see how my braking habits might have contributed to my crash and offer specific, simple steps to improve them, and he made a few small adjustments to the position of my bike's saddle that made the bike feel much more stable and controllable. That one hour made a big difference!
