Clogging is the traditional percussive folk dance that originated in the Appalachian Mountains, introduced by Scots-Irish immigrants and blended with African and Native American rhythms and movement. We will focus on the traditional improvisational style of this dance, referred to as buck-dancing or flat-footing. Emphasis will be on creating percussion to accompany traditional old-time music.
This dance is fairly high energy and is great for improving cardio fitness and building bone density. Students should be aware that clogging can be somewhat demanding on the joints. Please bring shoes with leather soles that will slide easily on the floor, and dress comfortably in clothing you can sweat in.

I have seen people doing partner style clogging like square dancing before, but I had never seen the style of clogging or buckdancing that Charmaine does until I saw her with her band, The Tallboys in concert. I was blown away by the percussion she was doing by just "playing her feet", AND playing rhythm guitar at the same time! When she said that night that she was teaching classes I knew that I just had to do it, no matter what! Charmaine has such a non-intimidating, enthusiastic, down-home style that instantly made me feel comfortable, no matter how dorky I might have felt. I got some great resources and tips from her too so that I could practice at home. I also met some great people in class that I have become friends with, so that is a bonus, meeting like-minded people. I thought it was going to be a lot harder and a lot scarier than it has turned out to be, and it is SO MUCH FUN! I wish I had more time to practice, but I will keep coming back to Charmaine's class as long as I'm in Seattle.

I love Charmaine spirit and zest for life, folk music and clogging/flatfooting. She is an incredible flatfooter who attaches many people who would never think of clogging but she her perform and just want to learn from her. Everyone should give it a try. No matter you age. For me it is something that I want to keep learning into old age if I am lucky to live a long healthy life. The first time I saw Charmaine clog I said to myself, "She is the person I want to learn from because I love her style of dancing." At that time I had wanted to learn clogging for a long time just hadn't found the style or teacher until I saw Charmaine dance.
