Floorcraft
Posted by Jake and Danarae on September 28, 2009
Recently we have been a part of several conversations about the flow of the floor at milongas. We have noticed frustration at many levels, from both leaders and followers ... Followers fear for their exposed toes, leaders get frustrated, embraces stiffen, and everyone suffers. People we talked with had all experienced the joy of a organized dance floor circling the room, but lamented it doesn't happen often enough.A well moving floor keeps everyone in line, but once the floor gets disjointed, it's all over... When the flow stalls or...
What is Aerial Dance? What kind of aerial dance do we do at Studio 12 flys?
Posted by Cherie Carson on September 15, 2009
Aerial modern dance was first recognized in the United States in the 1970s. The choreography incorporates an apparatus often attached to the ceiling, allowing performers to explore space in three-dimensions. Aerial modern pieces, whether solo or ensemble, often involve partnering. The apparatus used has its own motion, which changes the way a dancer moves in response.
Terry Sendgraff, is credited with inventing the "motivity" trapeze. Terry Sendgraff performed, choreographed and taught in the San Francisco Bay Area from the early '70s until announcing her retirement in 2005, at the age of 70. The motivity trapeze came about as a result of an exploration on a low-hung circus trapeze. The ropes twisted together, causing the apparatus to spin. By formalizing this, hooking both...

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN'T DANCE BECAUSE YOU HAVE 2 LEFT FEET

2 LEFT FEET~ THERE’S NO SUCH THING
MaryLee Lykes ~ Lykes To Dance
In this article the reference to a “follow” and “lead” is used instead of “men” and “women” because women can be lead or follow as well as men can lead or follow-- so those labels no longer are relevant.
So you think you have “2 left feet”. That could mean 2 things -- that you believe you really can’t learn to dance (because you have 2 left feet) or perhaps it’s an easy way to avoid the dance floor because you’re ”just not into it”.
It is my guess that the majority of the “2 left feet” people tried to dance or learn to dance and were not successful and therefore concluded they had “2 left feet” and could not be taught to dance.
If you have a desire to learn to dance you can learn to dance!
In 18 years as a dance teacher I have never met anyone who could not be taught to dance.
If you have taken a dance class and it was a frustrating experience that reinforced you opinion about “2 left feet” then I may be able to help you understand why that might have happened. When teaching a dance class a teacher...
That new craze called Bollywood!
Posted by Layla Habib on September 01, 2009
What is this thing called Bollywood anyway? Bollywood gets it's name by combining the American "Hollywood" musicals influence with the musicals of Bombay (Mumbai)...hence...the name Bollywood was created.
Bollywood has been made popular worldwide by current movies like "Slumdog Millionaire"...and BIG Bollywood stars like Shah Rukh Khan(now known simply by SRK) and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. These stars have a global effect on today's Pop Culture.
Bollywood is a fusion mix of India's classical dances which include the Regional dances of Bhangra, Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Rajastani, Garba to name a few. These classical dance...

Props To Beginner Male Dancers
Posted by Ashley McKenna on August 30, 2009
As a female Instructor with over 14 years teaching experience, male students have been the bulk of my business.
I get a wonderful feeling sending a new male dancer out in the world, because to be frank there are not enough male dancers out there.
If you go out to a dance club you will see on average 2 ladies to each man, and I am being generous with that average. I've seen it at even 6 to 1.
For males it's great odds, and in my personal opinion every man...

Salsa Group Dance Lessons
Posted by ProGuildSocial on August 12, 2009
Taking a group dance lesson can be timidating at first and result in your feeling rather diffident about the prospect of attending. I know when I first started taking dance lessons, I avoided group lessons because it reminded me of grade school when I tormented by teachers who forced me to take lessons. The lessons were really bad and irrelevant. They taught us waltz. then left us to dance on our own and nobody waltzed, they just swayed for 3 minutes (like most newly married couples do).
