Props To Beginner Male Dancers
Posted by Ashley McKenna on August 30, 2009
As a female Instructor with over 14 years teaching experience, male students have been the bulk of my business. I get a wonderful feeling sending a new male dancer out in the world, because to be frank there are not enough male dancers out there. If you go out to a dance club you will see on average 2 ladies to each man, and I am being generous with that average. I've seen it at even 6 to 1. For males it's great odds, and in my personal opinion every man should learn to dance. Where else do you get to meet someone for the first time, and are allowed to touch them right away. That's why manners are so important. I help to develop the male dancer, by teaching not only the steps, the lead, floor craft, etc.. but the etiquette of dance as well. Male dancers have the hard job, no doubt. Not only in learning steps, communicating lead, timing, & floor manipulation, but also by making that long walk across the floor to ask a lady to dance. To know that the chance of rejection, in an area that they themselves aren't even confident in yet, is an option. That is also why I get so upset when I hear, or see Ladies being rude to beginner male dancers. Ladies it's our job to encourage each male dancer out there. We all know that there are not enough. A smile and a "Yes, Thank you I would like to dance." goes a long way to help that beginner dancer become advanced. Otherwise we ladies are left to dance with each other, and we already see enough of that, because there are not enough men that know how to dance. Yet :) My props to all the male students out there. Keep Dancing!!!
