Class Description: This athletic movement-style from South India is an ancient dance form that incorporates story-telling elements with eye-hand-feet coordination. Beautiful geometric shapes (created by arm, hands, and legs), rhythmic and rapid movements, and emotional expressions (executed by facial gestures) are essential elements of every Bharathanatyam dance item.
In this introduction class, students will begin by learning basic adavus (rhythmic footwork patterns), modified jathis (combination of adavus to create longer series of movements), and mudras (hand gestures). Through the course of the semester, all students will learn to enact and recite 2 ancient Sanskrit Slokas (invocatory verses to create intention for Bharathanatyam movement). The goal of the class will be to teach students to perform a 5 minute solo musical dance piece within 10-weeks.
START DATE: April 13th, Mondays, 6:00 - 7:00pm

suba has redefined the way i think about dance. her teachings have inspired me to start to experiencing dance from a more holistic perspective. what i learn in her classes effect the way i walk in the world to such a positive degree that i'm not sure i ever want to stop taking her classes. i feel more whole as a human being because of what i have been learning with suba. suba's classes are equal parts laughter anddiscipline, growth and reexploration. in just a few simple words: try suba's class.
