This class offers four quarters of ongoing instruction in drawing and composition with Julia Hensley. The course is designed to provide continuity and mentored development with a single teacher, with each quarter building on the previous one and lots of individual attention. This is an opportunity for complete beginners as well as artists looking for a fresh approach to progressively strengthen drawing skills and creativity. In the first quarter, you will acquire a practical visual vocabulary by exploring paintings and drawings in graphite, charcoal, and ink, As you look at the work of famous artists, you will learn a range of approaches to drawing that can be applied to anything you see. Learn to separate out the elements of line, shape, and value, and use these concepts to deconstruct the artist's thinking. Then, discover how these visual elements affect composition, mood, concept and viewpoint, and how you can use the, to develop original ideas as you freely play on the source images in your own experiments. Finally, share your discoveries in lively open discussions. Feel your confidence and originality grow as you learn to see, use, and talk about the concepts that build a satisfying work of art.
