With that as the basis, I also stress proper technique, studying rudiments, and learning to read. I teach out of a series of books that I wrote Called "Rhythm by the Numbers" which give an instant visual matrix that the student can use to immediately understand and identify with rhythmic patterns. With these tools as a stepping stone my students quickly become proficient readers.

Review of Drum Set Lessons + Rhythmic Studies, November 20, 2008
"When I saw that my 2 year old son had an interest in drums and drumming. I wanted to give my child the opportunity to get up close and experience the real thing on a semi regular basis. After a few phone calls and some not so eager teachers, I found Doug and The Rhythm Lab. I was so excited that Doug was excited about me bringing my son in for some play time. Doug’s approach is easy going and simple to learn. My son took to Doug right away which to me says something even bigger! We look forward to our next session every time we leave. I highly recommend Doug as a teacher no matter if you or your child wants to learn how to play the drums. Doug you are awesome! See you soon...Emily & Aiden"

Review of Douglas E Smith, March 17, 2009
Doug has written a curriculum for learning to play drums that is just brilliant. By focusing on the fun of playing, and taking away the fear of making mistakes, he makes it effortless to learn. You might think you're just plunking around, but you're building physical memory, and taking a few hesitant steps in music theory at the same time. By the time more complex information is introduced, it's the basis for furthering your skills, and you're eager to take those next steps.
The greatest fear people have in taking any kind of lesson is losing motivation. That won't happen with Doug. You're having so much fun you'd never know you're working.
