This weekly All Levels class, and is both a great introduction to djembe drumming from West Africa, and a great way to deepen what you already know! You will learn basic hand position and technique, posture, drum sounds, time keeping, and basic patterns AND, for each rhythm taught, you will learn the Djembe accompaniment parts, the Kenkeni, Sangban and Dundunba bass drum parts, the various signals and breaks, and you will learn how all of these parts fit together. With Karim’s friendly and patient “listen and repeat” style of teaching, you will begin to lay down the neural pathways between your head and hands that allow you the coordination needed to control and create the volume, tempo, and sounds that you want. Karim will teach a variety of traditional rhythms from Guinea West Africa in a hands-on format. Once you learn these parts, and how they fit together, this class will give you the chance to build the stamina, timing, consistency, and cadence needed to “hold your own” while drumming in an ensemble!

Review of WEST AFRICAN DRUM CLASS every Wednesday night, August 20, 2009
Karim and Sarah Lee are incredible teachers. I have begun to learn about the great tradition of West African Music and dance in a context that combines the authentic life experience of a true master and the interpretive skills and artistry of someone who has found a way to present West African culture to Americans in a meaningful and respectful format.
