You may have learned the British style of English rather than the American style or you may have learned from someone with an accent. * that we often drop the "h" sound, as in "What's 'is name?" rather than "What's his name?"
* that we reduce "t" sounds--we say "wader" instead of "water"
* that we reduce the word "to" in most situation, so that "today" sounds like "t'day"

There are many other examples. These are the same rules that Americans with accents, like inner city people or people from the south, have to learn before they can have professional public speaking careers. When you learn the standard American dialect, many of your listening/speaking questions will be answered and you can take the TOEFL with much greater confidence.
