What should I be looking for when evaluating a new gym?
I'm really into classes, and want to use weight machines. I'm not into the free weights or treadmills. Any recommendations, and suggestions on what to look for when hunting for a gym to go to?

I look for:
* convenience (either close to work or home -- if not convenient, I just won't go)
* machine maintenance (some clubs always seem to have broken aerobic machines)
* good tv/audio on the aerobic machines -- at Denali Fitness (http://www.denalifitness.com) they have TVs in each machine, so you can pick what you want. It's nice to have a little selection.
* enough machines / not too crowded (best to go to the gym near your normal exercise time, to see what it will really be like when you want to get on your favorite equipment)
* clean showers/restrooms - this is a good indication of the service level of the gym
* lots of classes that are relevant to you (if you're into classes) -

I primarily look for a good selection of well-maintained equipment, and a gym that isn't too crowded so that I don't have to wait to use any of the machines.
I go to Mode of Fitness ( http://www.modeoffitness.com ) on Capitol Hill. It might not meet your requirement for classes -- they have a few, but nothing compared to most of the other clubs in Seattle. It is brand-new, has nice staff, and great equipment though, and it's cheap. $29/month.

Find a gym that you enjoy going to, and offers a variety of programs to keep you motivated. Some gyms offer a wider variety of classes, others not as many. If you are into classes, approach your gym search with that in mind. Finding one that is convenient and affordable is also a high priority.
Here are a couple of questions to think about when looking for a gym.
Are you comfortable working out at the gym you are considering?
Is the staff friendly and helpful?
Is the gym membership reasonable? What is included in your membership?
Are classes included or are they extra?
Do they offer enough classes that interest you to keep you coming back?
Are the classes scheduled when you would be able to attend?
Does the gym have a wide variety of weight equipment available? Is the equipment in good working condition and well maintained? -

Hours of operation, distance and ease of commuting from your residence or work, services included in monthly dues, sign-up fees, sign-up promotions, parking spaces when you're most likely to visit, friendliness of the staff, general environment at the club.
Good luck.Reply from Joseph Sunga:Thanks a lot for the helpful suggestions to look after. These are all things I considered when choosing my gym, especially distance and friendliness of staff.

The number one thing to look for is convenience.
In my many years as a personal trainer, it is the largest contributing factor to someone sticking with their program.
Secondly, you should feel comfortable and welcome when you walk in the door. Some gyms have an intimidating vibe, and if you feel it, walk out.
And of course, they should have the machines that you like and they should offer a wide variety of classes.Reply from Joseph Sunga:I've never had the best results w/ a personal trainer -- maybe it'll be different. I actually joined Rain Fitness here in Seattle and they seem very motivating / friendly.

Hi Joseph - Both Rain Fitness and All Star Fitness in Seattle are sweet deals ($35-$45 per month last time I checked). They offer many classes that are included in membership fee, have top of the line equipment and I hear All Star also throws in towel service.

Reply from Joseph Sunga:Thanks for answer. I actually signed up for Rain Fitness here in the South Lake Union area. It's pretty sweet there, I really like it.

Thanks a lot for the help everyone. Gretchen, I'll be actually joining Rain Fitness here in South Lake Union. They seem like a good bunch of folks.
The place is affordable, free parking, a good amount of classes, new and clean equipment, access to both gyms. Looking forward to it.
