A Perspective on Dance as Fitness
Posted by Chris Daigre on August 20, 2009
I recently was introduced to Teach Street through a friend. In exploring the site, I discovered how comprehensive and neat it was in offering many features to communicate information and express ideas. Through years of teaching, I have formulated opinions about dance and its connection to fitness.
People are aware of how important exercise is in maintaining good health. Many begin a regimen only to switch or quit, because the one thing they want is to have FUN while they work out. To achieve results, one must be consistent and dedicated over an extended period of time. Uninspired regimen = little to no results. Contemporary instructors must consider this when designing classes or programs.
Dance has been significant in social culture for many years. It should be a part of our everyday lives. As society has shifted to increased sedentary jobs and leisure activities, many people don't feel comfortable moving their bodies. Dance has a social stigma. People think it's fun to watch but think- I can't dance - I look stupid - people who can dance are born that way. They think it's fun but are too afraid to learn. The dilemma: Dance is fun and keeps you in shape - but I don't want to look silly trying to learn.
The elements of dance has a wealth of material for a successful fitness program for the everyday individual. I start a class with rhythmic isolation movements of extremeties and sections of the body (feet, hips, rib cage, hands, arms, head). It is a great tension reliever that everyone can do without any previous experience. Starting this way builds a sense of comfort and confidence. Progressively I add more isolation combinations and movement patterns. By the end of the class, new students often feel personal pride and accomplishment as a part of a group and desire to return for more. Fun, challenging, attainable = great physical results. This is the recipe for a successful fitness program for everyone at any age.
The benefits of a dance fitness program include: sleeping and eating better; prevention or decrease in injuries; more assurance in any social, personal or business situation.
My life would be much different if I had not pursued dance fitness. The most fascinating benefit is the connection you develop between your mind and body. You take it with you to any new endeavor or challenging circumstance. This is a simple yet essential element that improves the quality of everything you do and every decision you make.
I believe in networking with like minded instructors or individuals. Please send a message or attend one of my classes.
