Aristotle said, “Plot is the most important of the six parts of tragedy. The characters serve to advance the action of the story, not vice versa. The ends we pursue in life, our happiness and our misery, all take the form of action.” Learning to structure a film is the greatest challenge facing most writers, so this course will develop your ability to conceive of a dynamic premise, structure a film and execute a screenplay with confidence. Instruction emphasizes traditional three-act structure and its mythic components, conscious and unconscious objects of desire, subplot development, scene execution principles, and the Journey of the Hero.

Review of Film Making: Where’s the Structure, September 29, 2008

I attended the Spring 2008 3-week-intensive course at TheFilmSchool...an experience I will always cherish. John's course 'Where's the Structure' was one of my top two favorite courses that I really looked forward to during the session. John is so enthusiastic about what he's teaching, I came out of that classroom so invigorated and inspired I wanted to start writing immediately! You might expect a course in structure to be dry and lifeless, but John's course was just the opposite, rich and emotional and exciting. All the courses in the program are amazing, more than worth the time, money and sacrifice necessary to attend--I HIGHLY recommend the 3-week session to anyone who is interested in become a screenwriter, or, really, ANY kind of writer.
