This class is designed to compliment enrollment in a beginning school band program. While band is a terrific large ensemble experience, it often does not provide sufficient individual instruction on a particular instrument to ensure the student starts well, and continues playing without frustration. The flute requires particular attention to ergonomic issues. Although "small," it is played asymmetrically, and away from the player's center of gravity. Additionally, the flute plays in a different key from a majority of band instruments, and so in order to accommodate the other instruments, the flute, in a band setting, is given a more difficult key to begin with than the rest of the band. This class will focus on learning the basics of posture and position, including proper balance of the flute, and will also start with the keys and fingerings which are easiest to begin with, and then will dovetail into the more difficult "band keys" later on.

  • "Great Instructor for Adults too!"

Review of Elizabeth Samse, February 02, 2009

Elizabeth Samse is a patient, non-condescending flute instructor that also understands the value of family life and outside pressures that make it hard for adults to learn a new instrument.

She never made me feel inexperienced, patronized, or not musically inclined but instead was always a supportive teacher. For example, whenever I felt frustrated by how I felt I sounded on the flute she competently reassured me that with time and practice the technique will come. She motivated me to want to practice (more) to get better and earn more confidence with my flute.

She worked hard with me to help with proper techniques including posture, fingering, and breathing. And was able to pull from her years of experience as well as her studies in her college years to help me with the above mentioned techniques.

Not only can Elizabeth teach the flute she can also help you decide which flute to purchase when you are ready to move from renting to buying or if you are just wanting to buy a better flute.

I am confident that if you hire Elizabeth Samse as your flute instructor you will not be disappointed and will look forward to each and every session you have with her. She can teach you from the very beginning, like me, or from a more advanced level. I recommend her wholeheartedly for either children or adults who have always wanted to learn to play the flute.

  • "My First Flute Instructor"

Review of Elizabeth Samse, July 18, 2008

I began studying flute as a total beginner at 19 - Elizabeth was unendingly patient and supportive.

She provided a great foundation. I now play flute at my college, and am preparing for a jazz-and-pop oriented senior recital this coming year.

The Flute--a small instrument with big ergonomic challenges

Often when I ask students why they chose to play the flute, one answer I receive (hopefully among others) is that it is small.  I think many people, including parents of young children, are un...
