A few suggestions that may help: First, are the objects "hallmarked?" On sterling look for "S.S." (no quotation marks) which stands for sterling silver or .925 (the metric designation for the % of pure silver per 1000 parts of metal). Sometimes you even see the word sterling. NOTE: Just because something says it's sterling or a karat gold does not guarantee it's purity or the specific metal.
For karat golds also check for hallmarks... sometimes they're well hidden or almost worn off. In the US you mainly see 10K or .417, 14K or .585, 18K or .750.
No luck finding hallmarks? ...then you need to do acid tests. Probably not chemicals you'll find around the house. The simply way is to take the objects to a place that buys precious metal... they should test it for free. Just takes a minute or two. Try scrap metal dealers, 'some' jewelry stores or coin shops.
