I know it's summer, and I know I should not be thinking about my next knitting project, but what can I say, I'm an addict. Here's the thing--scarfs are all I've made and I'm ready to take the plunge into something new. Hat? Dare I say sweater? Any hot tips on great knitting projects?

You should do socks -- those will always come in handy. :)

a shawl? it's like the inbetween step from a scarf to a sweater! lol

Yes! Great ideas. I'm a little weary of using anything but straight needles at this point so a shawl might be the perfect next step for me...socks may be further down the line (although I have heard of folks learning to knit making socks first--so it's probably not that hard, right?)

A shawl, a scarf, anything would be cool. Just pick a cool color scheme. :)

It's further up in difficulty I'm sure, but why not knit some gloves to go with your scarf? The local school bus driver back home would knit all of the kids gloves each winter, and they were really special! Definitely a favorite memory from school days.

A perfect next-step project for summer is a tank top. You can make it out of cotton so it's not too hot to work with, and all you have to do is knit 2 pieces with minimal (but great for learning decreases) shaping, and then sew up the shoulders and seams. There are lots of patterns on the internet - feel freet to contact me if you have questions. Do you know about Ravelry.com?

Kristen. That is a fab idea!! Do you use 100% cotton? And thinnish yarn, I suppose? So it sounds like you knit the front and back in two separate pieces (starting with the bottom --> up, or does it not matter)? That sounds completely do-able, thanks!

JennJenn, yes 100% cotton or a blend is great, but really anything that you like the feel of and would enjoy wearing. There is one yarn that feels amazingly soft and it has really nice drape, called Bamboo, and it's made of 100% bamboo! The brand is South West Trading Company. It would make a wonderful tank. But there are many other wonderful choices too.
I would look for a pattern so you can get the shaping just right, but I would think that most will start at the bottom, then decrease for the armholes and then the neckline. Front and back separately then sew up the seams. Easy! Just Google something like "knitting patterns for tank top" and you should get lots of choices, some free and some for purchasing.
Good luck! Keep us posted! Feel free to ask if you have questions.
