Dave Schappell says:
If I wanted to learn to sail, does the type of boat make a difference? That is, should I pick a certain length boat? Does it matter if it's wooden, fiberglass or other? Better to learn on a lake and/or protected area?
How long does it normally take to get proficient?

420's are pretty safe and stable. Save the Lasers for either A) once you have some experience under your belt or B) warmer weather.

Everyone I know has started on Sunfish... they seem childish, but they are easy and reliable starters. The transition to Lasers is relatively easy from there.

i went to national aquatic school put on by the red cross in florida ---it was a great ten days ( they used a summer camp) and came out a sailing instructor learning the points of sailing on a small boat one mast one mainsail-- first is the only way to go then all the skills transfer to the bigger boats
