Students will learn John Zorn's musical game piece Cobra. Cobra is a musical "game" and relies upon the creativity of the ensemble. Improvisation is a large part of the piece and a great way for students to become familiar with improvisatory concepts.

The composition consists of a set of cues notated on cards and rules corresponding to the cues that direct the players what to do. The number of players, instrumentation, and length of the piece is indeterminate. Because there is no traditional musical notation and the players improvise, the piece may sound radically different from performance to performance.

Through the learning of the piece students will learn a multitude of improvisatory concepts, learn to use their ear, and be directly involved with creating the composition that results in realization of the piece. This is a fun and easy way to be creative in a very unique way.

Any instrument and all skill levels are welcome.
