The guitar is the all around instrument for song accompaniment, but can also be highly melodic. Most of the books I have encountered deal with one or the other. I like to combine and alternate these two approaches to the instrument, providing a more rounded playing. It's important to learn the chords, both in the basic position, and also up the neck. But melodies give a lot of satisfaction. I base my flat-picking teaching on Doc Watson's unsurpassed playing. I also teach finger-picking, which is a totally different approach. This is based on such greats as Mississippi John Hurt, John Jackson, and Libba Cotten.
