Hypnosis or No Hypnosis
Posted by New York Awareness Center on November 04, 2009
At a recent Wellness Fair that Mark and I were participating in last week, we asked a woman if she were ever hypnotized. She was hurriedly passing by our display seeking to get away from the title she saw - Hypnosis. She answered "No", and then added, "And I don't think I want to".
I laughed and she looked at me as if I were from Mars.
I then asked, "Have you ever seen a hypnotist?" and she said, now intrigued, "No."
I said, "That's not true. think again!" She was puzzled.
I said, "You are looking at one now!" She looked confused.
I asked, "You don't know what hypnosis is do you?" she shook her head. I explained.
Hypnosis is...
How To Start a Tai Chi Practice
Posted by Northwest Fighting Arts on October 12, 2009
It's great to see people picking up Tai Chi. I love the art and have practiced it for many years. However, Tai Chi is a deep practice and it can be easy for one to get lost in the beginning. I was thinking of what I'd tell myself if I could go back to when I started. Find a good teacher. They should be able to explain and show the movements well. If your teachers movements are coarse or abrupt that should raise questions. When explaining what certain movements are for there should be a balance between grand concepts (cultivating chi, uniting movement and intent, etc) and very tangible examples (opening the hips, developing balance by conditioning muscles, aligning the body to negate physical force, etc.). If the instructor spends a lot of time talking about extraordinary abilities or talents they developed but can't show you,...

P90X blog: Goal setting 2
Posted by abbood on October 03, 2009
I will continue to talk about goal setting because in my humble view, the biggest barrier for people to actually begin or successfully complete their p90x is because of a problem with goal setting.
One reason that holds people back is fear of failure. Fearing that they will start but won't make it all the way. But as Tom Hopkins said, failure is not the worse possible result, not trying is. If you try, you can succeed, if you don't try, you have already failed. If you suffer from this problem then pretend that you have already failed, then give it the best try you can.
While a lot of us are willing to risk failure, we still don't give it our best shot. Why? Because we somehow tell ourselves that success isn't worth the trouble after all. "Why do I have to have six pac?", "I'm ok the way I am, I don't have to be Arnold Schwarzenagger" etc.
If this is your problem let me tell you that you don't have to become Arnold, and not everyone works out for the same reason. What is important is that you find what will motivate you personally. But before that you must be aware of the many different kind of motivations and benefits to working out, and then you can pick the one that compels you the most.
I believe that the strongest reason to work out and eat healthy is that it simply the cheapest and most efficient...

How the heck do you lose weight?! Part 1
Posted by Josh Henri on September 29, 2009
This very complex question has frustrated and annoyed a lot of people throughout the country for many years. Not only is it a VERY loaded question, but everyone has an opinion. You can do a search on the net or go to a library and find 1000's of different beliefs, systems, philosophies, workouts, diets, pills and contraptions to try and tackle this question and all that it in tales. I am no different, as a fitness professional I too have my own "take" on how to answer this question. I try as hard as possible to make things as easy and simple for my clients. Confusion breeds disappointment, disappointment leads to frustration, frustration = trips to double fudge-Ville. You don’t have to get super complex to understand what needs to be done.
The main thing I stress when I first start working with a client is that there has to be balance. A workout or nutrition program has to fit into and be a PART of your life. Too many people go in guns blazing and two weeks later they are drained and burned out and STOP their program all together. I start all of my clients off with a program that is balanced and will fit into their life with (as little resistance as possible). If you’re looking to start a program or have started and haven’t gotten any where I suggest you sit down with a notebook and...
