Metal, DIY and the global economy in four paragraphs.

Posted by hazardfactor on September 09, 2009

By and large, we are trained to be passive recipients of our commodities and our culture.
Americans are, or were until someone noticed that people were taking offense, generally called consumers. We drive our economy by consuming products. The products themselves are often foreign cheaply made and  disposable, and rarely allow any provision for repair or modification.
The American citizen...

    • This article increased my desire to get my own welding equipments -- else, my lessons will be a one-time experiment -- what's the best place to purchase a half-decent welder? Or, is rental the more intelligent choice for the hobbyist/once-monthly welder?

    • Posted by hazardfactor on September 10, 2009
    • A light duty welder can be rented from Central welding on fourth ave in Georgetown for about $35 per day. These can be plugged right into wall current (120 ish volts). Central has a program that allows you to apply a percentage of your rental fees toward the cost of purchasing a machine so it's not a bad way to go.

On the otherr hand a decent little 120 v welder pops up on craigslist periodically and 3-500 for a name brand welder is in my mind a decent investment. One or two fix its will justify the expense.

Web 2.0 in Education

Posted by Premiere Tutoring LA on July 15, 2009

Technology is advancing everyday and education should be advancing with it. Our responsibility as educators is to keep up with the latest technology and incorporate it into our curriculum and teaching tools. Recent studies have shown the average student knows more about the internet and technology than their teachers. We as educators  need to be able to reach our students where they are and become involved in what is most important to them. If we do not make that connection we are not truly doing our jobs and we are robbing our...

The values of an Internet Business

Posted by Mickey Bryant on May 02, 2009

For starters, if you are planning to start a business or in the market to accelerate your existing business a web site is the tool for you. We are currently in the midst of a technological Revolution. Meaning that, in the last few years and in the years to come, the uses for the internet have and will be on a record breaking high. Physical locations and resources such as libraries, phone directories and shopping centers are getting less popular to virtual consumers. It is projected that by the year 2012 primarily all shopping, research and bill paying will be conducted...

Shopping for the right ecommerce partner is hard, see Audra Hajj’s experience and advice.

Posted by Audra Hajj on April 22, 2009

2008 was a hard year for all... But one thing that held its ground was online sales. We also saw many small to medium business excel. Why? Well the small to medium business is king in this economy. You have the ability to look like a large company, you can sell products before you buy them, you can run a successful business with low overhead, and you can change quickly. With the right ecommerce partner you can keep up with the changes online, and never be left behind. But the question how do you choose? I did a little test myself. I sent the same requirements to 20 ecommerce companies. I received only 12 Responses, guess the others had better things to do then sell. First warning sign! The price quote was $500-$15,000. I never changed one thing on the request for quote. With such a huge difference in price how do you know who to choose? I did a process of elimination. My approach may seem strange to you but from my 12 years of experience in ecommerce and online marketing my approach was quick and to the point, and I felt confident with the choice I would have made. Step 1 : I checked for negative business practices. I know you cannot make everyone happy, but I felt if I saw a huge amount of negative remarks. Well I would...

How to Recognize and Avoid Spam

Posted by iAlicia on March 05, 2009

“Spam” is an unwanted, unsolicited email message. If you’ve
had your email address for awhile, you can receive up to hundreds of spams a
day. Here is how to recognize a fraudulent email, and solutions for both
managing and avoiding spam.

How to Recognize Spam:

·
By the FROM line:

1)   You don’t recognize the name of the sender.

2)
The sender’s email address has gibberish, like aserjglsk@hotmail.com.

3)
The address ends in .ru or another international
extension.

4)
You receive the same message from several
people.

·
By the SUBJECT line:

5)
It starts with RE: and doesn’t contain a message
subject you yourself already sent.

6)
The email promotes a product you don’t need or
want.

·
By the MESSAGE :

7)
Look for broken English.

8)
Your bank will...

How to watch web content on your HDTV

Posted by Scott Jacobson on February 24, 2009

The problem with long-form video content on the web is that most people watch it on their laptop or desktop PC (or iPhone).  Yet because of things like screen size, eye fatigue, and force of habit, we generally prefer to watch long-form content on the television in our living room; the so-called '10 foot experience'.Don't get me wrong.  There are plenty of people (particularly kids who have grown up consuming content on their PC) who are watching long-form video on their computers and cell phones.  And in 10-20 years, they may constitute the majority (in that timeframe, the lines between computer and television will also have continued to blur). But how do we get all of the great long-form video content from the web to that centerpiece of the living room that holds a near monopoly on long-form viewership for the vast majority of the population?Unfortunately, there isn't a great, clean answer today.  There are companies like...

    • This was truly fantastic -- really -- I've heard so much about Boxee, but really didn't know what all the excitement was about until I read your article, and watched/listened to the video above. I'm still not sure I feel like staring at my computer screen for a few additional hours with Boxee, but I do get the value that it adds. I'm looking forward to bringing the web experience to my big-screen one of these days... maybe in 2010 :-)

    • There are some interesting non-technical challenges to getting premium content streamed to the web onto your TV. See the multitude of blog posts, tweets, etc. about content owners forcing Hulu to block Boxee from streaming Hulu to its player. Jason's post called 'Doing Hard Things' on blog.hulu.com was, in my opinion, a great example of being transparent to your customers and shining a spotlight on the choke hold the cable companies have on the premium content owners.
