Designing Curriculum Webs

From Denise Corso Denise Corso

Subject: Seattle Internet Classes

Ages: 20 to 80 year olds

Skill level: Intermediate

With the advent of multimedia in the classroom and the requirement of teaching more in less time, we, as educators need to be creative in our approach to presenting material. We are becoming more student directed. Our teacher directed lessons are morphing into facilitators of student directed learning.

One very effective way of presenting content is to create a curriculum web. What is a curriculum web? It is basically, unit based lesson planning that incorporates technology and the internet. You plan an entire unit (a series of lesson plans and assessments) that cover the content you need students to learn incorporating technology and web-based materials as needed. Not all of the lessons are web-based or requiring a computer, however, the entire unit does incorporate technology in places and the unit is written on a website.

You will need intermediate computer skills in order to write a curriculum web.

You will learn:

*the components of the curriculum web and how to write one (you need to bring your own content--maybe a unit you have developed and want to freshen up by incorporating more technology)

* how to create assessments that actually assess the measurable objectives so you have data that shows if a student has truly mastered the concepts.

*basic website design strategies--what works, what doesn't

*see examples of different curriculum webs that are effective and some that are not

*how to incorporate webquests in your curriculum webs (they are not the same thing--a webquest is only one or two lessons in a unit and is all on the internet.)

*how to become a facilitator of student learning.

You will leave with a completed curriculum web that has been published on the internet and is ready for your students to use.

This is a two-day workshop (total 12 hours). It can be scheduled across more days in smaller blocks as the lessons are in modules for ease of scheduling.
