A jewelry making series to get you started “The Right Way." We'll meet once or twice each week: 2, 3-hour sessions for 4 weeks or 1, 6-hour session for 4 weeks. This class will introduce you to the "How-Tos" of creating fine jewelry. Your choice of schedule re: days & hours, based on available times.

We'll explore numerous techniques for a comprehensive overview of the processes used in creating fine jewelry. (See my other jewelry making offerings for individual workshops.)

You'll become familiar with traditional jewelry tools & equipment as well as common jewelry making operations. I'll do lots of demonstrating in addition to your hands-on time at the bench.

SUBJECTS COVERED:
Safety Issues
Silver & Gold Soldering
Lost Wax Casting
Making Bezels
Prong Setting Faceted Gems
Earring Making
Ring Making
Polishing / Finishing Techniques
Electroplating
Tool Making

You'll also learn how to set-up a jewelry work space and what tools to add as your needs grow. We'll discuss the best sources to find precious metals, gems and jewelry making supplies. (knowing good sources is very important) Classes will cover the topics listed above plus many 'tricks-of-the-trade.' You'll learn how to use a flex shaft, rolling mill plus gold & rhodium electroplate, do sand blasted & satin finishes and more. Lots of information, lots of work but lots of fun!

My goal is to "empower" you on your way to becoming an independent jewelry artist able to make what you design, working on your own.

I’ve been making jewelry for over 39 years as a full time profession. It's been said "Experience is the Best Teacher." I’d like to share some of my experience with you.

Review of Jewelry Making: "4 Weeks Of Classes", February 23, 2009

Richard has been making jewelry for longer than I've been alive! His wide variety of experiences and enthusiasm for passing on his knowledge, make him a great instructor and a valuable resource for information. I would highly recommend this class for people who are interested in setting a strong foundation, or getting a new perspective on their work.

Review of Jewelry Making: "4 Weeks Of Classes", January 10, 2009

You could say I was inspired. We started with an overview of how a
jewelry workshop is put together and various safety issues to be
aware of. By the second class I was soldering, making a bezel and
preparing to set a stone the way jewelers work. In the third class I
learned how to make special hand tools that give an artistic and
complete look to gem setting. So much information that just kept
coming, class after class. What a difference in my confidence and
jewelry knowledge after Richard’s instruction and feedback.
