I'm offering private small group instruction at Pratt Fine Art Center. Using Pratt's well-equipped studio, we can work together to either get you started in making jewelry or add to your expertise. I can work one-on-one with you, or you can split the cost and bring a friend (or up to 3 friends.)
This is an economical way to share your learning experience with just a few people (who you pick!), and we will work together to decide what you will be making and learning. It can be a one-time event or ongoing lessons.
I'm an experienced jeweler, working for seven years in the field. I received my BFA with an emphasis in metals, worked as a bench jeweler for a year, and then received a fellowship to work and take classes at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina for two years. Upon my arrival to Seattle in 2007, I have assisted other studio jewelers in the area and taught classes at Pratt and through my own studio. I have worked and studied with many leaders in the field of studio jewelry, and have a range of experience than I can share with you.
My strength is in fabrication, and techniques I can teach you are:
sawing & piercing
cold connections and rivets
texturing & patterning metal
surface treatments
soldering
hollow construction
bezel setting
professional finishing (polishing, tumbling)
professional findings (clasps, bails, earwires, etc)
ring sizing
steel fabrication
various inlay techniques- solder, resin, niello
kum-boo (fusing 24k gold to sterling or fine silver)
marriage of metals
simple stone setting
using the flex shaft, drill press, buffing machine, acetylene torch, dapping punches, circle punches, various hammers and their purposes, rolling mill, etc
If you have specific techniques you would like to learn, please contact me with questions- I can probably help you.

Review of Tailored Learning at Pratt Fine Art Center, May 11, 2009
I took an eight week beginning jewelry/metalsmithing class from Sarah through Pratt. Sarah was a great teacher, very well organized and prepared, great handouts, and she always took the time to make sure demonstrations were useful and easy to see. Sarah's quirky sense of humor kept everyone paying attention and she was very patient and helpful during the inevitable "help, I've messed up my piece" moments. She took a personal interest in everyone's different projects. I was sad when the eight weeks were over, but I did finish the class with two sets of earrings that I was very happy with. I wouldn't hesitate to take another class from Sarah. Oh and her own work is pretty cool too!

Review of Sarah Loertscher, May 24, 2009
I was impressed with how organized and prepared Sarah was for every class. She provided detailed handouts a week ahead and had her lesson all though out when we arrived. Then she proceeded to put us all at ease, tell funny stories and expertly teach us all the basics of jewelery/metals. I think everybody in the class felt they could do it all based on the instruction Sarah provided. Plus she was enthusiastic and helpful to everyone individually. Provided great suggestions on how to make our projects even better and loved to share great examples of her own and others work for inspiration.
I would love to take more classes from her.
