Flute choir is an excellent opportunity for young flutists to learn more about their instrument. Often in band situations, because there is only one teacher to help a class full of budding musicians, the instructor cannot possible tell if each student is correctly blowing, fingering the notes, articulating, etc. In flute choir, I stress correct posture and hand and body positioning, accurate articulation, good tone production and breathing, playing...

Flute choir is an excellent opportunity for young flutists to learn more about their instrument. Often in band situations, because there is only one teacher to help a class full of budding musicians, the instructor cannot possible tell if each student is correctly blowing, fingering the notes, articulating, etc. In flute choir, I stress correct posture and hand and body positioning, accurate articulation, good tone production and breathing, playing in tune with others, and becoming more independent players. We will work on a variety of musical styles from 3-part music to 6-part or more. This means that players may be alone on their part, rather than sharing parts with someone else, creating in them more confidence as a performer. And I move the parts around, meaning the same person is not always on first: everyone who want to can play first flute.
And the added bonus? It's fun!

Born and raised in New England, LeeAnn Sterling received her Bachelor of Music degree from Wheaton College (Massachusetts) and attended the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, where she studied with Lois Schaeffer of the Boston Symphony. She has done additional work with acclaimed flutists: Jean-Pierre Rampal, Carol Wincenc, Mindi Kaufman, Julius Baker, Donald Peck, and John Solum. During graduate studies at the New England Conservatory, Mrs. Sterling was a member of the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra. While touring the U.S. and Europe with the New England Youth Ensemble, she doubled as principle flute and recorder soloist.
LeeAnn later moved to Georgia where she was a member of the Augusta Symphony and Opera Orchestras and a founding member of Augusta's Musica Antiqua, an ensemble dedicated to music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. With her wide taste in musical styles, it was not unusual to find her performing folk and jazz music at coffehouses, or singing with the Augusta Symphony Bluegrass Band!
As a graduate student and Teaching Fellow at the University of Oregon, she studied flute under Richard Trombley. LeeAnn performed with the Eugene Symphony, the Eugene Opera Orchestra, the Mozart Players and the Oregon Festival of American Music. She was also founder and director of West Winds Flute Choir.
LeeAnn now resides in Portland, Oregon, with her husband and two sons. She is adjunct professor of flute studies at Marylhurst University where she also directs the Marylhurst Flute Choir for middle and high school age flutists. LeeAnn has been a member of the Oregon Chamber Players since 2006 and performs regularly throughout the area as part of the ensemble Thousand Waves with classical guitarist Peter Zisa and koto player Yukiko Vossen.
