Poetry in the Wild (Prose Writers Will Also Find this Useful)

Beautiful language begins of this earth, not in abstraction. Good writers, poets in particular, use all their senses to ground the reader in a specific place. Beautiful language begins of this earth, not in abstraction. Good writers, poets in particular, use all their senses to ground the reader in a specific place. Natural history details will anchor the poem to an instinctual area of the brain, grabbing the reader physically and emotionally. For instance, smell and taste trigger the strongest memories. Powerful poets, such as Richard Hugo, Theodore Roethke and William Stafford, bind their work to earth, town, and root cellar. We will journey into nature, learning through many exercises to use its rich inspiration in original and surprising new poems. You will learn to speak with nature’s voice, adding greatly to your own.

  • "Promotes Great Results"

Review of Susan Zwinger, February 19, 2009

I had Susan in a journaling class at Fairhaven, at WWU. I was reluctant to begin a lot of the exercises she assigned, thinking they were silly, but was always happy with the results. I’ve continued to use some of these tools and prompts years later. I would recommend her to anyone embarking on a creative journey that is looking for a guide. I never found her to be restricting in any way but always open and accepting.
