THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO NUMBER CLASSIFICATION

We have been using numbers in everyday life. Everything from 0 to 22/7 might sound the same to most, but numbers differ from one another. Based on their characteristics, they are classified in groups. Based on all the different types of numbers Mathematician’s have named, we have built the ultimate guide to Number classification.

The associated chart (at the bottom of the article) shows how the number groups are related to each other. Read below for more details on each number group.

Real Numbers – All kinds of numbers that you usually think of – from bus route numbers, to your weight, to pi and even the square root of pi! In short everything!! Everything? Really? Well…almost

Imaginary numbers – Have you ever tried finding the square root of -1? If you haven’t, try it on your calculator. It might show an error (if it is a dumb calc) or it might show an ‘i’. That little ‘i’ is called an imaginary number. In short square roots of negative numbers make imaginary numbers.

    • I just forwarded this to my cousin in high school. I always love guides since they're easy ways to get an idea of a subject or concept. Thanks for sharing.

BALLPARKING - A FASTER WAY TO SOLVE SPEED MATH MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS

Posted by lazymaths on June 05, 2009

A lot of mathematics exams nowadays, e.g. GMAT, SAT, etc, are either completely multiple choice or they have multiple-choice components. These exams required students to solve a stipulated large number of questions within a small amount of time. Students break a lot of sweat over solving these questions, by trying to solve them completely like other questions, and not utilizing the information that is in front of them.
One of the basic difference between multiple-choice questions and other questions is that for multiple-choice ones you have to just figure out the answer, and for achieving this objective, you need not necessarily solve the question completely, as the answer is right in front of you, among the 4-5 choices that have been provided.
Ball-park, or possible range strategy, is one such very effective method to quickly solve a...

PROVING APPROXIMATION WITH PRECISION

Posted by lazymaths on June 05, 2009

The New York Times recently (Sep 16) published an interesting article – “Gut Instinct’s surprising role in Math”. The article shares an interesting view about human mind’s ability to instinctively solve math problems. It shows how the mind is wired to perform some seemingly complex math tasks with ease.
To quote it from the article “Whenever we choose a shorter grocery line over a longer one, or a bustling restaurant over an unpopular one, we rally our approximate number system, an ancient and intuitive sense that we are born with and that we share with many other animals. Rats, pigeons, monkeys, babies — all can tell more from fewer, abundant from stingy. An approximate number sense is essential to brute survival: how else can a bird find the best patch of...

Mathematical Journeys

Mapping Your Child’s “Number Sense” to Make Math Make Sense
The ability to understand math and its underlying concepts is key to developing a deeper understanding of the world around us. Yet, how many of us, or our children, throw up our hands in frustration or groan when we encounter a math problem? Or maybe your child easily navigates basic arithmetic only to stumble with fractions, algebra, geometry or other more advanced topics. We all can get lost in unfamiliar territory. Some of us have a better direction sense than others, and then again, sometimes our assumptions about how things should be laid out get in the way of our figuring out where they actually are!
For example, when our family moved to New Jersey from the Midwest four years ago, finding our way around town was challenging. Having never visited the state previously, New Jersey was strange and unfamiliar territory.
Even our first trip to the grocery store felt like an adventure as we were unfamiliar with one-lane underpasses, traffic circles, and jug handles. To further complicate things, having only experienced grocery stores with the word "FOOD" in their names, we didn’t know ShopRite and Stop&Shop were actually grocery stores, so we weren’t even sure where to go to stock our pantry. With help from new neighbors and directions from MapQuest, we located a nearby A&P. Unfortunately we took a wrong turn following the directions and found it quite difficult to get back on track – although we did...

WHY MATHS AND NOT MATH?

Posted by lazymaths on March 12, 2009

This is like asking why plural and not singular. I mean, why use plural and not just singular - always. Well, anyone (pretty much) who knows a bit of language grammar will use plural where the reference is to more than one and singular to refer a single item. No brainer here!
So, why do we use the term Math and not Maths to refer to Mathematics. Remember we don’t say or use Mathematic!!
We all know that Mathematics is a really a body of knowledge related to quantities, figures and forms. It includes a variety of areas ranging from simple Arithmetic and...

SEX & MATH

Posted by lazymaths on March 12, 2009

The topic of whether men or women are better at math has almost always evoked a debate. Some even call it sexist to ask such a question – or should we call just a social scientist? Why are there fewer women in math oriented careers than men? Is it because of math skills or just social causes? (http://discovermagazine.com/2003/sep/breakgirls)
Numerous studies and research have been done in this field and yet they seem to be inconclusive. It is really easy to find diametrically opposite research results. See for instance – The University of Wisconsin study...

    • Great article! Have you read 'Brain Rules'?

      http://www.amazon.com/Brain-Rules-Principles-Surviving-Thriving/dp/0979777704/

One of the chapters explores the brain and how gender can play a role. There are some interesting conclusions about male/female development and how classroom interactions are more to blame that girls are statistically less interested and confident in math than boys (and therefore *think* that they aren't as good, but are actually just as good). It's a real great read.

INTRODUCING SPEED MATH AND ITS ADVANTAGES

Posted by lazymaths on March 05, 2009

A number of people either dislike Math or are 'Math handicap' when it comes to solving everyday Math. Let's say, you go to Macy's and fall in love with that great dress with a retail price of $39.99. You are carrying a coupon of 25% off which you plan to use, so how much would the dress actually cost you (pre tax)? Most people dread to do the calculation. They'd rather go to the cashier and ask her to ring up the dress and coupon to see what amount it costs now. How about learning to do the same calculation - without needing any calculator, just using your brains and that too in under 5 seconds! That's where...
