As a viola and violin instructor, I have taught many of my students how to read music, and it is not as hard as you might think. In my past experience, it takes around 1-3 hours for the average person to learn how to read music. We can meet at my home in uptown or a coffee shop in the twin cities area, and can break your lesson into a couple sessions if necessary. This is primarily a one-lesson class, but if the student wants to delve past the basics and more into music theory I would suggest signing up for my music theory lessons. This is for someone who is self-motivated and just wants a start in the basics.
We will cover: common clefs, time signatures, basic symbols, and concepts of rhythm and division of a beat.
If you are interested in these things, please consider taking at least a few music theory lessons: dictating or accurately performing rhythm, order of sharps and flats and the circle of fifths, keys and recognizing key signatures, chords and chord progressions.
