This course focuses on the interplay between lyrics and melody, and the ways in which this interplay creates coherent, expressive, listenable songs. This course focuses on the interplay between lyrics and melody, and the ways in which this interplay creates coherent, expressive, listenable songs. It does not deal with production or performance techniques. All styles are welcome: Art song, theatrical song, blues, jazz, pop, country, folk, rock, or anything else. Students will write a new song each week and perform it for the class, where it will be critiqued by the instructor and discussed by the class as a whole. A piano and guitar will be provided, although those who want to bring their own guitars are welcome to do so. Students should also bring lyric sheets to aid the discussion. At the end of eight weeks students will be able to record at least one of their songs for a compilation album produced by Peter Spencer for IMG Media.
