Our Mission is...
To address the needs of contemporary artists and creatives by providing an affordable, high-end, multi-disciplinary, open source facility where creative professionals can pursue their careers and projects while building a lasting art community in Brooklyn.
Our Story

Founders Jason Goodman and Jeremy Lovitt moved to New York City in 2004. They were immediately faced with the limitations of being a working artist; either you work at home and don't have the space and tools you need, or you sacrifice creative freedom and work for someone else.

Their solution: 3rd Ward. In September 2005, they took over this 20,000 sq. ft. warehouse space in the third ward of Brooklyn. Friends and local artists put their blood, sweat and a whole lotta love into getting the facility open by May of 2006.

About 3rd Ward's Education Program
3rd Ward offers multi- and interdisciplinary courses in visual art, technology and fabrication for artists (both amateur and career) and creative professionals looking to expand their skill set or just have fun. Our demographic is huge: Brooklyn artists, Manhattan professionals, and neighborhood folks all come to 3rd Ward to learn everything from screen printing and furniture design to welding and web design.

Classes - Most of our classes are project based, and class sizes are small, so there is always plenty of one-on-one instruction time. Classes are scheduled to afford the instructor time to personally advise his or her students when needed. With a maximum of ten (and an average of seven) students in most classes, the discussion is always varied and lively without being overwhelming. Because of our diverse student body, it's just as certain you'll learn something from your peers as you will from your instructor.

Instructors - Our instructors are professionally active in their field. We are not interested in stuffy credentials, but rather actual experience. All of our instructors are passionate about what they do, and do it on a daily basis; this means you're not only learning from someone with tons of experience, but also their constantly updated familiarity with best practice standards. You will leave your class having learned not only a new skill, but having learned it in its most up-to-date form.

Facilities - 3rd Ward's classes focus on results. Students leave having screen-printed on a record sleeve, built a functional webpage or made a family coffee table. All classes are taught in our 20,000 square foot East Williamsburg location which is outfitted with a full service wood and metal shop, a mac computer lab and two 800 sq/ft photo studios (one with a paintable cyc wall). In addition to students, our facility is the workspace for close to 300 members, so even during non-class time expert answers are always close at hand.
