Weight Loss VS Fat Loss
Posted by NT11 on October 27, 2009
So many people ask me what is the best "weight" loss program. Well, just about any fad diet can give you "weight" loss. Starving yourself will result in "weight" loss and there are, of course, lots of pills (hydroxycut, alli) who guarantee "weight" loss. But let's look at what you're losing.Dieting in the traditional sense (calorie or food restriction, pills, meal replacement) slows your metabolism, throws your body into fat storage mode and pretty much makes you cranky and unpleasant to be around. You may lose "weight" but,...
Protein the essential macronutrient
Posted by One 2 One Fitness on October 20, 2009
My goal is to help you understand how your body uses different nutrients and how you can maximize fat loss by eating properly and exercising.
Truth of the matter is any diet will work for a period of time. The glut of information and misinformation we are constantly exposed to makes it even harder to know how to properly go about losing weight and keep it off. Instead of denying yourself the foods you desire, you must learn to eat in moderation and allow yourself “cheat days”. Your health is a lifelong process, and your diet must reflect that. Most diets are arduously torturous and you revert back to old eating habits once you have lost the desired weight. I will show you how to avoid all that. First though we must understand the body and what we put in it, so lets begin.
Your body has evolved over many, many years into the efficient and amazing machine that we take for granted today. There was no bottled water, potato chips, soda or processed foods when man first appeared. Man started eating twigs, berries and what ever was available at the time. As we became hunters, meat was introduced into our diet. All the while our bodies managed to keep us active, vital human beings. It did that because the body does one thing well: it survives.
You must understand that your body does not want to diet. It seeks a state of homeostasis, which is a perfect balance, not too much, not too little. It doesn’t care if you carry a little bit of extra weight or fat. As a matter of fact it wants that fat and weight so it can have some fuel in reserve. Your body fights dieting like it fights infections, colds, cuts, etc. It treats it as a hostile act and tries to stamp it out. You must learn to beat the body at its own game and win.
The only things your body needs to survive are air, water and food. It doesn’t care what food tastes like or where it comes from. Its sole purpose is survival. We humans create an emotional attachment to food. Your body can care less if Wolfgang Puck prepared the meal you are about to eat. Unfortunately food brings out intense feelings in human beings. Who amongst us doesn’t have a favorite food, a comfort food? What were we taught as children? You cannot leave the table unless you finish everything on your plate. Combine that with all the ads for food,...
Eating habits
Posted by One 2 One Fitness on October 20, 2009
In this and upcoming articles I will focus on helping you with your eating habits and working on your diet plan. Today I will give you some simple tips on how to prevent overeating and change your mindset. It is so easy to be misled by today’s packaging and labeling, to the point where you think you are eating healthy. The reality is you aren't.
A perfect illustration of misleading is what happened to me the other day. At my favorite "after gym" restaurant, I decided to have a Caesar salad with grilled chicken. I figured I would splurge a little and have some fattening dressing. The calories, fat and carbs couldn't be that much I reasoned. It's salad with grilled chicken. After all it's my job to know these things.
My meal arrived along with laminated sheet from which caloric information on every item on their menu could be perused. So I decided to look up the feast in front of me. I nearly had a seizure as I read the totals for my so-called healthy meal (their wording not mine). With dressing on the salad the total calories were 1768 with 9 grams of saturated fat. Carbs were over 70 grams. The kicker was the sodium, which was an astounding 2700 mg!!
I always get dressing on the side so I was able to discard a huge portion of fat and calories. I didn't eat the garlic bread, nor did I have all the greens so I was able to cut a large amount of sodium, sat. fat, carbs and calories from the salad. If this was a healthy meal then I wonder what constitutes an unhealthy one. Let's just say that reading the nutritional info for the kid’s meals will send you running for cover. I want you to be aware of what lurks out there and how a lot of prepared food is not as healthy as you are led to believe. Don't be afraid to ask, and more important don't be afraid to make substitutions. All restaurants will accommodate your requests, you just need to ask. Read the tips below and try to incorporate them into your daily routine.
Yours in health,

The 7 Reasons To Add Fermented Foods Into Your Diet
Posted by JeannePetersRD on September 22, 2009
Beneficial bacteria and yeast in fermented foods and drinks are live and active! Whether you purchase fermented foods and drinks or make them at home, you are getting active bacteria.
Fermentation pre-digests vital nutrients for you. Packed with B vitamins, minerals and enzymes, fermented foods and drinks are whole foods full of nutritional value in their own right. On top of that, the microflora increase the bioavailability of the nutrients in all the foods you eat by hundreds of times.
Fermentation does not use heat. Your fermented foods...

A Key to your Weight Loss and Wellness
Want to lose weight and have robust store houses of energy!?
Our human history holds secrets to our success! Check it out..
The human body has evolved over the last 100,000 + years. For more than 90,000 of those years we ate nothing but vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes (beans) root vegetables, fish and lean meats (that's when we could get our gnarly hands on it). Our body evolved over, not tens, not hundreds not thousands but Tens of Thousands of years eating these foods. This means our body is very well established in it's ways and yearns to process.. unprocessed foods.
Unprocessed foods are basically all food you can buy that is NOT within a PACKAGE... at the grocery store, the corner store.. any kind of store (granted, there are unprocessed foods that exist within packages, such as: beans, some vegetables, some fish.. these examples are the exception and not the norm).
Unprocessed foods store the real nutrients that your body...
4 Components to a Healthy Meal
Posted by Therapeutic Chef on July 22, 2009
I've heard a few people out there dismiss the vegetarian diet after trying it for a short time, saying that they just didn't feel satisfied or complete unless the meal contained animal foods. Most of this is psychological and it takes a few weeks for new habits to be formed and tastebuds to change. But for some people there may be some truth to them not feeling satiated if the meal did not contain all the necessary components. And this could happen with any diet, not just when switching to a vegetarian diet!
You need each meal to contain the following 4 components to feel complete.
A Whole Grain (BEYOND the bread): think actual grain, like a bowl of quinoa, millet, brown rice, buckwheat, barley, oatmeal, or whole grain pasta. These carbs will never make you fat, and are a vital source of fuel for energy and brain function.
A Lean Protein: Beans and Lentils are best because they have lots of fiber and are low in fat. Next best sources are tempeh (a fermented, whole soybean product), seitan (wheat protein), or a small handful of RAW nuts and seeds (raw walnuts,...

One of the most satisfying vegetables at a summer BBQ is an ear of hot buttered corn on the cob. In addition to being sweet and satisfying, corn has many health benefits! Native Americans grew and ate corn they called it Maize. Corn is one of the most popular vegetables and is consumed all year round. It is filled with several nutrients that are good for you. Corn is a high fiber, fat fighting complex carbohydrate that is also...
Natural Sweeteners: A healthy alternative to sugar and artifical sweeteners
Posted by Yvette on July 08, 2009
Today more than ever, most people are consuming large amounts of sugar every day in everything they eat. Eating excess amounts of sugar can cause weight gain and other health issues. Many people opt for artificial sweeteners, such as Aspartame (NutraSweet® and Equal® ) Saccharin (Sweet’N Low® ), Sucralose, (Splenda® ), Acesulfame K (or acesulfame potassium), Neotame, (used in some diet soft drinks and low-calorie foods). All of these artificial sweeteners are approved by the FDA as safe. However, they are still being scrutinized and blamed for many illnesses from headaches to heart disease. Laboratory studies have shown some of those artificial sweeteners can be unhealthy. Studies performed on laboratory Rats link aspartame and saccharin to cancer, including a recent seven-year study conducted by a major nonprofit oncology lab in Italy. (1) With all the constant controversy about the safety of artificial sweeteners some may wonder what alternatives are out there.
Natural sweeteners are a healthier choice and they are gentler than sugar, they don’t affect your health like refined sugar and artificial sweeteners can, and are gentler on the body and the body’s blood sugar....

Great article! Lots of good info. I've been really liking Zevia (the soda sweetened with Stevia), but some people complain that it has a funny aftertaste.

Thank you for your comment. I'm glad you enjoyed my article and found it informative. Yes, I have heard a lot of people complaine that Zevia and Stevia has a funy after taste. It depends on your taste and what you like. I like Agave Nector instead of Stevia. Both are healthy for you and way better than sugar and artifical sweeteners

Spinach: The veggie with health enhancing nutrients
Posted by Yvette on July 08, 2009
I love eating spinach -- it's so easy to prepare and good for you too. The nutrients found in spinach are Vitamins B2, B3, B6, C E, K, beta carotene, folate, calcium, cooper, magnesium, manganese, iron, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, zinc, fiber, omega-3 oils, protein, tryptophan. However, spinach is mostly known for its rich source of iron and calcium.
Popeye made himself super strong by eating spinach, but you may be surprised to learn that he may also have been protecting himself against osteoporosis, heart disease, colon cancer, arthritis, and other diseases at the same time. The strength of spinach lies in its high content of a large number of nutrients that work together. Spinach contains a relatively high level of iron, compared to other vegetable and meat sources. (1) It is an excellent source of iron, but it is equally rich in vitamin C, which helps the body use iron efficiently. The oxalate content in spinach does not prevent the body from absorbing calcium. It contains more calcium than the oxalates can bind. Just 2 tablespoons of cooked spinach contains more than the daily requirement of vitamin K and...
