Review of Conga/ percussion lessons, April 05, 2009
I am a beginning conga drum student. If you are looking to learn hand drumming and percussion instruments--I highly recommend Ian Turner as a drums and percussion teacher!
I’ve been taking drum lessons from Ian since Dec 2008, and I also know other conga drum students—Ian really knows how to bring out the best in each student, and how to instill the confidence a student needs to reach out and do more and learn more.
I see this in my own learning as I see how far I have come, and I see it in the other students when we get together to play.Lessons are never boring! Ian uses a variety of techniques to teach new concepts and rhythms, and to practice and improve rhythms I’ve already been learning. Sometimes we play drums together, sometimes we both play to recorded music (on CDs), and sometimes he plays the guitar part while I play the drum part.
There is always something to take home and practice. Ian teaches practice techniques that are important and help to set the foundation for strong drumming. Other exercises help me to listen to the natural rhythms that occur all around--rhythms that can inspire me to create my own rhythms on the drums.
Ian tunes his lessons to a student’s learning style and personal and musical interests. I look forward to my lessons, I try to practice more and more, and I love being part of the West End Caribbean Ensemble Workshop. Playing music with others really brings the music to life!
Did I mention Ian's drum studio? It is a fascinating place--an artist's studio located in an old, tudor-style building in Lynwood Center on Bainbridge Island. You are surrounded by original paintings, glass art, drum sets, conga drums, other assorted drums, and percussion instruments from around the world. It's a lot of fun to try out some of these instruments that I've never even seen before! And, the Treehouse Cafe is located just a few doors down so you are never far from a great latte.

Review of Ian Turner, March 19, 2009
Patient, encouraging, talented, enthusiastic, generous, extremely funny....just a few of the attributes of this marvelous instructor, Ian Turner. I took a giant leap off a cliff when I decided to take conga drum lessons. I knew nothing about conga drums, no previous experience (with any musical instrument) and not a clue about where to turn. Ian was highly recommended to me, so I signed on and the fun began. Ian’s teaching style is relaxed and he puts tremendous effort into finding what works for each student. He gently pushes just enough to challenge but not discourage you. He doesn’t flaunt his talent, but demonstrates enough to make you want to practice more so you can play like him someday. When I have struggled, he has steadfastly encouraged me and helped me to believe that maybe...just maybe...I could really be good at this eventually. He is incredibly funny which makes the lessons enjoyable and provides a perfect atmosphere for learning. Playing the conga drums has brought me great enjoyment and that is all thanks to Ian’s extraordinary talent for teaching. I consider his generosity and skill in sharing his musical knowledge to be a great gift and one I sincerely appreciate. In my mind you won’t find a better instructor. I highly recommend Ian as an instructor who would be welcoming to students of all ages.
